Connecticut natives in Hawaii

Did you know many of the New England missionaries to Hawaii came from Connecticut? One of the best known was Dwight Baldwin. Born in Durham in 1798, Dwight Baldwin graduated from Yale in 1821 and the Auburn Seminary in 1829. By 1831, Baldwin was married to Charlotte Fowler of Northford– and headed for Hawaii. Once on Maui, the Baldwin settled in what is now the oldest standing building in Lahaina. They would live in the 1834 home from 1838 to 1871. Baldwin would serve as the pastor of Wainee Church. Although the Connecticut missionaries have a complex legacy, they left their mark on the historical record.
